USDJPY Pip Value and Position Size Calculator

US dollar / Japanese yen: what a pip is worth, which size fits your risk, and what to check with your broker before you trade it.

Quick answer. One pip on 1 lot of USDJPY is worth about $6.67 for a USD account at the example price of 150.00. With $10,000 at 1% risk and a 30 pip stop, that sizes to 0.50 lots. Contract values on this page are examples: confirm them with your broker.

What to know before sizing USDJPY

USD/JPY is quoted in yen per dollar, so the pip is 0.01 (two decimals, not four) and the profit is earned in yen. One standard lot of 100,000 dollars gains or loses 1,000 yen per pip, and converting that to dollars means dividing by the current price. That is why a pip is worth about $6.67 at 150 but $7.14 at 140.

The pair is driven by Bank of Japan policy, US Treasury yields and, at times, the threat of official intervention in the yen, which in the past has produced very fast moves within minutes. Stops can slip in those moments, so treat the stop as an intention rather than a guarantee, and consider a smaller size around such events.

Watch for

  • Two decimals, not four: 150.25 to 150.45 is 20 pips, and a move of 1.00 is 100 pips.
  • On a yen-denominated account no conversion is needed: a pip is simply 1,000 yen per standard lot.
  • The dollar value of a pip falls as the price rises. A lot sized when the price was 140 under-risks slightly at 160, and the reverse. Refresh the price when you size, especially in a fast market.

Worked examples for USDJPY

Every number below is computed with the same formulas as the calculator, at the example prices shown, for a USD account.

Value of one pip at different sizes

At the example price of 150.00, the money value of one pip on USDJPY for a USD account:

$6.671 lot
$0.66670.1 lots
$0.06670.01 lots

Sizing a trade on USDJPY from your risk

Account $10,000, risk 1% ($100), stop 30 pips. Each pip is worth $6.67 per lot, so the exact size is 100 ÷ (30 × $6.67) = 0.5 lots. Rounded down to a tradable size that is 0.50, and the real risk is $100.

When the USDJPY price moves, the pip value moves

The dollar value of a pip depends on the USDJPY price. At 140.00 one pip on 1 lot is $7.14; at 160.00 it is $6.25. Size a 30 pip stop at 140.00 and you hold 0.46 lots for a $100 risk. If the USDJPY price then moves to 160.00 before you use that size, the same position risks $86.25 instead.

$7.14Pip value at 140.00
$6.25Pip value at 160.00
0.46 lotsSize at 140.00
$86.25Risk of that size at 160.00

The math behind the numbers

value of 1 pip per lot = contract × pip size (0.01) → 100,000 × 0.01 = 1,000 in the quote currency, then ÷ price (150.00) to convert the quote currency into USD = $6.67
size = (balance × risk %) ÷ (stop in pips × value of 1 pip per lot)
round down to a multiple of 0.01
position value = size × contract × price (converted to USD)Same formulas as the pip value and position size calculators (USDJPY numbers above are examples at the price shown). Rounding down keeps real risk at or below your limit.

To run your own numbers for another currency or contract, use the lot size calculator, the pip value calculator or the position size calculator. How much to risk per trade is a separate question, covered in how much to risk per trade, and the step-by-step is in how to calculate position size.

USDJPY questions

Why is a USD/JPY pip not worth $10?

The pip is earned in yen: 1,000 yen per standard lot. A USD account converts it at the current price, so it is 1,000 ÷ 150 = $6.67 at 150 and changes whenever the price changes.

What is a pip on USD/JPY?

0.01, the second decimal. A move from 150.00 to 150.50 is 50 pips. Many brokers show a third decimal, which is a tenth of a pip.

Why can USD/JPY stops slip so badly?

Official yen intervention and surprise Bank of Japan news have caused sudden moves of well over 100 pips in minutes. On most brokers a stop-loss becomes a market order once touched, so the fill can be worse than the stop price.

How much is one pip worth on USDJPY?

For a USD account, one pip on 1 lot is about $6.67 at the example price of 150.00, and $0.6667 on 0.1 lot. Brokers differ, so confirm the contract size before you rely on it.

What size should I trade on USDJPY with $10,000?

It depends on your risk and stop, not on the account alone. With 1% risk and a 30 pip stop the example size is 0.50 lots, which risks $100. Change the stop and the size changes with it. This is arithmetic, not advice.
