GBPJPY Pip Value and Position Size Calculator

British pound / Japanese yen: what a pip is worth, which size fits your risk, and what to check with your broker before you trade it.

Quick answer. One pip on 1 lot of GBPJPY is worth about $6.67 for a USD account at the example price of 190.00 and a USD/JPY rate of 150. With $10,000 at 1% risk and a 40 pip stop, that sizes to 0.37 lots. Contract values on this page are examples: confirm them with your broker.

What to know before sizing GBPJPY

GBP/JPY is a cross quoted in yen per pound, with a pip of 0.01. One standard lot earns 1,000 yen per pip, and a USD account converts that with the USD/JPY rate, not with the GBP/JPY price: 1,000 ÷ 150 is about $6.67. Using the wrong rate is the classic error on this pair, and the calculator asks for USD/JPY for that reason.

The pair has a long reputation as one of the most volatile in forex, because it combines a lively currency (sterling) with a funding currency (yen) that can swing sharply when risk appetite changes. Wide daily ranges mean wide stops in pips, which mean small lots for a given dollar risk: a 40 pip stop at 1% of $10,000 allows 0.37 lot, not one.

Watch for

  • Two sources of risk: sterling news (Bank of England, UK data) and yen news (Bank of Japan, risk sentiment, intervention). Either can move the pair on its own.
  • Stops and targets are in 0.01 steps, so 190.00 to 191.00 is 100 pips. Distances look small on the chart and large in pips.
  • Overnight swap on yen crosses can be significant and is broker-specific. It is not part of the pip value, so add it to your cost picture if you hold for days.

Worked examples for GBPJPY

Every number below is computed with the same formulas as the calculator, at the example prices shown, for a USD account.

Value of one pip at different sizes

At the example price of 190.00, the money value of one pip on GBPJPY for a USD account:

$6.671 lot
$0.66670.1 lots
$0.06670.01 lots

Sizing a trade on GBPJPY from your risk

Account $10,000, risk 1% ($100), stop 40 pips. Each pip is worth $6.67 per lot, so the exact size is 100 ÷ (40 × $6.67) = 0.375 lots. Rounded down to a tradable size that is 0.37, and the real risk is $98.67.

When the USD/JPY moves, the pip value moves

The dollar value of a pip depends on the USD/JPY. At 140 one pip on 1 lot is $7.14; at 160 it is $6.25. Size a 40 pip stop at 140 and you hold 0.35 lots for a $100 risk. If the USD/JPY then moves to 160 before you use that size, the same position risks $87.50 instead.

$7.14Pip value at 140
$6.25Pip value at 160
0.35 lotsSize at 140
$87.50Risk of that size at 160

The math behind the numbers

value of 1 pip per lot = contract × pip size (0.01) → 100,000 × 0.01 = 1,000 in the quote currency, then ÷ USD/JPY (150) to convert the quote currency into USD = $6.67
size = (balance × risk %) ÷ (stop in pips × value of 1 pip per lot)
round down to a multiple of 0.01
position value = size × contract × price (converted to USD)Same formulas as the pip value and position size calculators (GBPJPY numbers above are examples at the price shown). Rounding down keeps real risk at or below your limit.

To run your own numbers for another currency or contract, use the lot size calculator, the pip value calculator or the position size calculator. When the pair is most active, check the forex market hours tool. How much to risk per trade is a separate question, covered in how much to risk per trade, and the step-by-step is in how to calculate position size.

GBPJPY questions

Which rate converts a GBP/JPY pip to dollars?

USD/JPY. The pip is earned in yen, so a USD account divides 1,000 yen per standard lot by the USD/JPY rate: 1,000 ÷ 150 = $6.67. The GBP/JPY price does not enter the pip value.

Why does GBP/JPY need smaller lots than EUR/USD?

Its daily range in pips is typically much larger, so a stop beyond normal noise is further away. For the same dollar risk, a wider stop in pips means a smaller lot.

What does a 100 pip move in GBP/JPY look like?

A move of 1.00 in price, for example 190.00 to 191.00, because the pip is 0.01. On one standard lot at 150 USD/JPY it is about $667.

How much is one pip worth on GBPJPY?

For a USD account, one pip on 1 lot is about $6.67 at the example price of 190.00, and $0.6667 on 0.1 lot. Brokers differ, so confirm the contract size before you rely on it.

What size should I trade on GBPJPY with $10,000?

It depends on your risk and stop, not on the account alone. With 1% risk and a 40 pip stop the example size is 0.37 lots, which risks $98.67. Change the stop and the size changes with it. This is arithmetic, not advice.
